Raising Standards in Teaching & Learning

Overview:

The session will explore the relationship between cognitive science, classroom routines, formative assessment and instructional coaching, helping leaders connect research to day- to-day practice in their own settings.

Participants will consider what the evidence suggests about how pupils learn, why learning can break down, and how teachers can use routines, questioning, retrieval practice and formative assessment to strengthen long-term learning and improve outcomes over time.

Throughout the webinar, leaders will reflect on the practical implications for supporting teachers at different stages of development, from trainees and early career teachers through to experienced practitioners and instructional coaches.

The webinar will explore:

• What makes great teaching, and the limitations of judging teaching through isolated
  lesson performance
• How memory, attention, prior knowledge and retrieval influence learning
• Why routines, relationships and classroom climate matter for learning
• Practical approaches to checking for understanding and responsive teaching
• Dylan Wiliam’s formative assessment strategies and their implications for classroom
  practice
• High-leverage feedback approaches that move teaching and learning forward
• The role of instructional coaching, teaching playbooks and professional learning
  cultures in reducing variability and raising standards

The session will include opportunities for reflection and discussion, enabling leaders to evaluate the extent to which their current systems, routines and professional development approaches align with the evidence base.

The webinar would be online using a platform such as Zoom or Teams and
delegates would be sent a code in order to sign in. Delegates will be provided with all
