Towards exceptional primary Maths teaching

This twilight webinar will allow primary maths subject leaders the opportunity to reflect on the current mathematics practices at their settings and consider how this aligns with current research reviews into the effective teaching and learning of maths.

Overview:

We will take guidance from the coordinating mathematical successes report, the EEF, the maths horizon report and the curriculum assessment review around what is working well in primary maths and what elements may need to be developed. This course will enable primary maths subject leads to consider adaptations that they may wish to make to their current provision in line with the ideas of creating firm foundations and ensuring mastery for all ahead to the introduction of the new curriculum in 2028.

Withing the session we will look at the current position of primary maths in 2026, designing an
effective curriculum, lesson structure and the use of precise mathematical modelling using concrete resources, ensuring that fluency is embedded, teaching to ensure that children can reason mathematically and demonstrating greater depth understanding through stretch, extension and grapple within problem solving.

powerpoint as a pdf.

Laura Brown

Laura worked as a class teacher in Merseyside and Cheshire for 14 years, teaching across KS1 and KS2. She worked in a Cheshire West School from 2007 – 2019 where she held the role of Mathematics Subject Leader from 2009. During her role she led many large, whole school projects leading to a rise in progress and attainment. Laura has been a consultant with First4Maths since 2019. She is passionate about the teaching and learning of mathematics and has a desire to see all children grow, develop and achieve their potential as confident and engaged mathematicians. Laura loves to share her enthusiasm and love of concrete resources (especially a beadstring) with teachers as part of her consultancy role with First4Maths. She believes strongly in enabling and empowering teachers to feel confident and take ownership of the teaching of mathematics in their own classroom.
