Latin: an examiner’s perspective on the new CE, 13+ scholarship preparations and how best to approach key topics

How many Latin candidates each year complete their paper at a frenzied gallop, only to dedicate their substantial remaining time to idle thumb-twiddling? It occurs with frustrating regularity; indeed to such an extent that shortening the allocated hour to forty-five minutes was given serious consideration when the new CE specification was developed.

Were this time to be used wisely – and had pupils a better grasp of how to self-correct and check their work – precious marks would routinely be saved.

Overview:

In this webinar, Ed Clarke will be drawing upon his years of classroom teaching and private tuition, as well as his experience as a 13+ examiner, to tackle the above, as well as offering other tips, tricks and advice on honing candidates’ performances and ensuring that their scores are maximised to the greatest possible degree.

Delegates are encouraged to interact with the speaker as well as one another throughout the proceedings so as to best share the experiences and insights of everyone present. A formal Q&A session will also take place at the end.

Ed Clarke

Ed Clarke co-created the current CE Classics specifications and is a highly experienced examiner, having for a number of years headed up Common Entrance and Common Academic Scholarship exams for all three classical subjects at ISEB, both as Classics Co-Ordinator and Senior Subject Specialist for Latin. He is a tutor, the author of Clarke’s Latin and Variatio: A Scholarship Latin Course, and formerly IAPS Classics Adviser, editor of the SATIPS Classics Broadsheet and Head of Classics at both Highfield School and Westminster Cathedral Choir School. He has written for The Spectator, the TES, The Independent, Quinquennium and the Journal of Classics Teaching and has addressed conferences for ISEB, IAPS and Keynote. He consulted for the DfE in launching their Latin Excellence Programme, which seeks to promote the teaching of Latin in state schools, and he campaigns for traditional, knowledge-rich teaching.
