Well-being for Better Teaching

Thriving, not just surviving: Well-being for teachers at work and at home
• How can we better manage stress, and develop resilience and avoid burnout?
• How does ensuring a good work-life balance enable us to do our job more effectively?
• How can stronger personal boundaries help us to remain focused on the key elements of our job, and ensure we do them to the best of our ability?
• How can we build personal resources to help us maintain a balanced outlook on our working, and personal, life?
• How can we learn to not only survive, but actually thrive, as a teacher?

Too often work becomes a place in which we’re merely surviving – getting by, firefighting, and running on adrenaline throughout term time, only to come crashing down into an exhausted heap come holiday time. Before we know it, holidays are over and it’s time to start all over again, and we’ve barely caught our breath let alone found time to relax and enjoy ourselves.
In order to do our best by ourselves, our colleagues and, most importantly, the children under our care, we need to be able to thrive, not merely survive, as teachers and school staff. In order to do so we need to be able to look after and tend to our own health, both at a physical, mental, and emotional level, in order to develop resilience, manage stress, and remain healthy and high functioning in our role.

This course is aimed at helping all school staff to develop skills, strategies, means, and resources to enable them to thrive at work, not just get by. The training will consider the stress cycle, the basic science behind the stress response, the value of developing healthy boundaries in the workplace, and will consider work-life balance and self-care to enable staff to remain physically and emotionally healthy and well, and therefore better able to do their job effectively and enjoy their role.

INSET Outline
Part 1: Understanding stress and learning how to prevent burnout
To develop a better understanding of the basic science of stress, the stress cycle and signs of stress
To become more aware of how we respond to stress as individuals, so as to become better laced to prevent, or minimise the impact of, burnout.

Part 2: Boundaries and work-life balance
To understand the value of good boundaries in the workplace, and to develop personal boundary setting
To reinstate the value of a good work-life balance in order to increase efficiency in the workplace.

Part 3: Developing and maintain a balanced attitude to work and wider life
To identify and build on personal resources to support the development of resilience
To understand the value of self-care, and consider how we can implement this when working in an intense environment
