SATIPS is pleased to announce a webinar on short-burst writing, presented by Talk for Writing Deputy Director Julia Strong.

Tuesday, 2nd February, 2021 (3:30 pm to 5:30 pm)

This will show how to help children tune in to all the writing tools they need to be effective creative writers.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This INSET is designed for anyone who teaches English to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 because the underpinning process is the same for different ages.

OVERVIEW

The training will illustrate how to adapt the approach to suit a wide range of attainment, including greater depth, so that all children are stretched. It will also demonstrate how differentiation depends on the level of difficulty of the examples that are co-constructed with the children, plus the levels of support the teacher provides when the children write their own versions.

OUTCOMES

By the end of the training, delegates should be confident in how to begin to use short-burst writing to teach children a wide range of hook-your-reader-skills which will enable them to become effective writers, examples of which are illustrated here. Delegates should also be more confident about integrating grammar into their teaching in an entertaining and meaningful way.

OUTLINE

The session will be interactive. The focus will be on helping children generate ideas and then judge what is most effective through close observation of images. It will show, through shared writing, how to help them bring all their senses to bear on selecting the most effective words and phrases that capture the mood of the pictures. This will be illustrated by a wide range of hook-your-reader writing tools. The training will also show how to build the children’s confidence in their writing skills by illustrating how their best ideas can be used later on in more challenging, longer, writing tasks.

Delegates will be provided with a PDF of the presentation prior to the event to make notes on, but will also receive an amended copy after the event so that they can see the co-constructed changes made during the presentation.
